Engineering School Program

Robosavages VEX School is an established Engineering program  which has a current enrolment of 120 students.  Our program is set up to encourage problem based learning within engineering courses built into the academic program.  Students compete in a VEX robotics competition setting and we emphasize teamwork.  Our robotics competitions are an effective learning environment to teach students to work the problem.

Our VEX program is characterized by a community of mentorship.  Grade 11 and 12 students mentor grade 10s.  And grade 10s actively assist the younger grades to build their robots.  Alumni robosavages are current university students in engineering.  They visit us frequently to help out and give advice.

This spirit of mentorship, camaraderie and hard work has enabled the robosavages to compete on the VEX world stage. We are indebted to the dedication of our former robosavages for offering advice and inspiration for our young robot engineers!

Our not so secret strategy... we start them young  and let the older ones do the some of the teaching.

Grade 8 Technology 8
Introduction to Robotics Our grade 8s are enrolled in full time academics at Gladstone Secondary. In their technology course, they will receive an introduction in basic robotics. We encourage the grade 8s to help the robosavages in collaborative after school build sessions and to volunteer at robotics competitions to learn from our older engineers.

Grade 9 Vex Robot Electronics (MTE--09EL)
This is an introductory course for students who want to explore the world of electronics, computers and engineering. Students will learn basic techniques to help with the building of various projects. Projects vary year to year but usually include several take home projects including a small robot.  Students in the VEX program continue to volunteer and help out in Robotics competitions.

Grade 10 VEX Robot Electronics (MTEE-10)
A continuation of introductory robotics.  Students continue to advance their skill and experience in building a robot.  Many of our students have now gained experience to compete in regional Vex competitions.

Engineering 11  (YERT-1AENG)
Co-Prerequisites: a Math 11, a Science 11, and a Technical Studies 11 course strongly recommended
Open to students in grades 11(with teacher permission)

Students will work on a common project for the first part of the course. Most often this is building a robot for VEX Robotics. Later in the year,  assignments may be chosen from various engineering disciplines. In the past this has included projects such as robots, trebuchets, r/c airplanes and boats, bridge building contests, tower building contests and even projects associated with career prep hours.

Engineering 12A (YERT-2AENG)
Co-Prerequisites: a Math 11, a Science 11, and a Technical Studies 11 course strongly recommended
Open to students in grade 11(with teacher permission)
